Coelogyne rochussenii orchids is Widely distributed in Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra (East & West Coasts), Java (West), Borneo (Kalimantan, Sarawak, Sabah, Brunei), Philippines, Sulawesi (Minahassa), Maluku A lowland orchids and normalyy found near riverbanks where the Altitude: Sea Level - 1500m.The Pseudobulbs is close together to a few cm apart, appr 15 x 2 cm, 2 leaves appr 27 x 6 cm

Bulbophyllum cameronense

The name will lead to a highland in Malaysia, the Cameron Highlands,... thus Bulbophyllum cameronense, is where this orchids is commonly found.

Still remember back in 2006, I managed to buy some plant and till todate, still not managed to grow it.

Bulbophyllum purpurecense

I have once found this Bulbophyllum purpurecense on tp of rock boulders, where it is being exposed by 100 % sun, sugesting that this species is quite robust.

The plant is slightly similar to bulbophyllum vaginatum, with some exception, ie the plant has slight trail of purplish color either on the leaf or the bulbs. Suggesting that the name is purpurecense.

Bulbophyllum patens

Bulbophyllum patens is another widely found lowland orchids in Malaysia. An epiphyte orchids normally found on tree barks. Unfortunatelt, until todate I havent have the opportunities to see in in situ. Normally the in situ situation is at the roadside stalls operated by the aborigines.

The single lightly scented flowers have a straight lip that is highly mobile, where this on of many reason the flowers will get easily pollinated by insects.

The bulb to the end of leaf normally around 15 cm with stiff leaf. A hot growing species that requires, hot conditions, shade, frequent waterings and fertilizings as well as high humidity.

Bulbophyllum virescens

Bulbophyllum virescens - another lowland orchids that can be found in Malaysia. The flower give a very smelly odour similar to dried fish, or called as "ikan masin" the locals.

The plant has ong and slender psudobulb, whereas the leave is soft and big. Normally found around waterfalls areas on top of rock boulders, covered with dead leaves and damp areas.

Bulbophyllum gracillimum

Bulbophyllum gracillimum is a lowland orchids commonly found in Malaysian jungles. In on of my trip to Pahang, a state in Malaysia, this species were found growing in rubber plantations. Trees upon trees, this species were growing.

Luckily, the plantations owner was not keen on this plant, but rather keen on the rubber its self!.

The flower is long and slender, while the plant it self looks more to bulbophyllum vaginatum?... dont think so!..

Bulbophyllum lobbii

Bulbophyllum lobbii found in one of my visit to a waterfalls in Selangor. Eventhough it is a common lowland orchids, finding it in situ is quite challenging.

Unfortunately, till to date, the plant simply refused to flower.Shall the medium be replaced or need to give the correct fertiliser?.

The flowers emit a strong stench , similar to dried fish or 'ikan masin' as called by the locals.

In one of my trips to a famous recreation area in Pahang, this bulbophyllum was found almost every where, either on the ground, on tree trunks and also on top of rock boulders, where, mostly, the area is shaded from direct sunlight. Where, the flowers is emitting a strong stench, finding it will not be so difficult.

The Attack? Why does orchids die?.. after dsecting a pot of spathoglottis, done by S_anuar from http://oapm.proboards52.com/index.cgi? revelas that the mealy bus deep insde the pot is causing the plant dying. The treatment? Well he is applying neem oil bought at http://bgreenfertilizer.googlepages.com/tipmenanamorkiddimalaysia for the treatment. The results? Need to wait few weeks to be known White traces on the roots White traces found on the pot Mealybusg - the white bugs!

Well, some people is using perlite mix, (see this http://www.slippertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5435) and some will tied it on a tree bark. Mine?,... hemm still diffcult to maintain the growth on a piece of wood bark. Perhaps to try on perlite and some mix of paddy husks.

Orchids in Langkawi

A walk along the Pantai Cenang of Langakwi Island, up north of Malaysia, reveals some orchids, which barely survive along the sea side, merely a few meters away from the sea level.

My trip to Langkawi Island, North of Malaysia, sometimes in December 2006, allows me to explore the orchids on the island. On top of Gunung Mat Cincang, where it accesible using the cable car, few species of orchids were found at the height of almost 708 meters.

Alhamdulliah, the hunting berbaloi.

Walaupun bertolak dari KL lewat sedikit, di sebabkan
dgn masalah visa, sampai di destinasi, lebih kurang
jam 10.15.

Memulakan pencarian dgn makan nasi lemak di pinggir
air terjun. Bacaan GPS menunjukkan ketinggian
lebihkurang 280m, hemm... masih lagi lowland. Sedang
sibuk makan nasi lemak, mata meliar keatas batu batuan
dan pokok...

Hah!, ada pun, Acropsis Javanica, Coelogyne sp, Bulbo,
dendrobium sp. ... wah ini sudah baik.

Selesai makan nasi lemak, kami memulakan pencarian di
sepanjang gigi air .... hemm.. macam tak de je...
ooops ... banyak nya dan cantik cantiknya spagnum moss
ni ... Ambik lah sikit .. OK... Tgh dok syok kutip
moss, alamak!, B. lasianthum la...

Pencarian di teruskan lagi selepas memasukkan B.

wah ...besa besar pulak bulbnya ... sah ini kampong
lasianthum ni...

Perjalanan di teruskan lagi, coelogyne lagi ...
berbunga pulak tu .. rasanya macam speciosa... tapi
bukan, ooo.. coelogyne septemcostata (nik confirm kan
ni). Lagi eria sp di jumpai, gemuk gemuk pulak tu ,
ah!... baru terjumpa bulb. medusae .. tapi tak banyak.
Ah!, jumpa liparis latifolia tengah berbunga.
Ambik!...

Hah!... seberang sungai, nampak macam cantek je ...
HEmm..  terpaksa lah seberang juga, basah pun basah
lah .

Bila toleh ke atas batu, mak ai!... banyaknya
lasianthum. Cari bunga, mesti ada ni ... yes !.. ada
bunga...

Cari lagi, lagi lasianthum berbunga, pening kepala!..
baunya .. mak ai!...

Ambik untuk kawan kawan,... Puas!.. melihat lasianthum
berbunga dgn begitu lebatnya.

Pencarian di batu batuan meperlihatkan bulb.
purpurascens coelegyne sp, dan bulb. paten.

Begitulah pencarian di sepanjang sungai yg telah di
laku kan. Alhamdulliah, pencarian berakhir jam 1400
hrs. dan jam 1530 hrs , dah sampai KL.
